Privacy Policy

Overview
Expanary never sells your personal information, never shows ads, and never uses your chats to train AI models unless you turn that on. This policy explains what we collect when you use Expanary, why, and the choices you have.
Expanary is an AI study assistant ("Expanary," "we," "us"). It answers your questions, learns how you learn best, and checks later what you remember. This policy covers the Expanary website, apps and related services (the "Service").
The short version:
- What we collect: your account details, the questions and photos you send, the learning profile Expanary builds from how you study, and basic usage and device data.
- Why: to answer your questions, personalize how Expanary teaches you, keep the Service safe, and run billing.
- Who sees it: only the service providers that help us run Expanary (like our AI, hosting and payment providers), under contracts that limit how they use it.
- Kids: you must be 13 or older. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian's permission.
- Your control: you can see, edit, export or delete your data anytime in Settings, or by emailing privacy@expanary.com.
Information we collect
We collect information you give us, information Expanary creates as you study, and limited technical information.
| Type | What it includes | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Name, username, email, profile photo, birthday (used only to apply the right age protections; the app shows just your age group), sign-in method (for example Google) | You, or the sign-in provider you choose |
| Content | Questions, answers, photos and files you upload, projects, study sessions, saved library items, edits and settings | You |
| Learning profile | Your teaching-style preferences (like examples or short answers), topics you've studied, hobbies and interests you mention (like games or sports, used to make examples relatable; you can delete them anytime), check-in results and study patterns | Created by Expanary from how you use it |
| Parent contact | A parent or guardian's email, if you add one | You |
| Usage | Pages and features used, number of questions, model chosen, timestamps, error reports | Your use of the Service |
| Device | Browser and device type, operating system, language, approximate location from IP address | Your device |
| Payments | Billing name, billing email, billing address, card brand and last four digits, payment history | You, through our payment processor |
We never receive or store your full card number. Payments are handled by our payment processor (Stripe), which follows card industry security standards.
Please don't share sensitive information you don't need to, such as health details, government ID numbers or passwords, in chats or photos.
How we use information
We use your information only to run, protect and improve Expanary for you.
- Answer your questions. Your messages and photos are sent to our AI provider to generate responses.
- Personalize your learning. Expanary builds a learning profile from signals like when you ask for examples, say you're confused, or skip long answers. It uses that profile to change how it explains things and to schedule review check-ins. You can see this profile on the "How you learn" page, override it in Personalization, pause it, or reset it anytime.
- Keep the Service safe. We use content and usage data to prevent abuse, enforce our Terms, and protect young users. This includes automatically estimating, from what you write, whether you might be under 18, so teen protections can turn on. If that happens by mistake, you can verify your age with an ID check.
- Run your account and billing. Including sign-in, plan limits, receipts and customer support.
- Communicate with you. Service messages (like security notices) and, only if you choose them in Settings, reminders, progress summaries or news. Weekly progress emails go to a parent only if you add their email and turn the feature on.
- Understand and improve Expanary. Using aggregated or de-identified usage statistics, such as how often check-ins are completed.
- Follow the law. Including responding to valid legal requests.
The learning profile is used only inside Expanary to teach you better. We don't use it for advertising, and we don't use it to make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you.
AI and model training
Your chats are not used to train AI models unless you turn on "Help improve Expanary" in Settings, Data controls. It is off by default, and it is always off for users under 18.
- Our AI provider. Expanary uses AI models from Anthropic (the maker of Claude) to generate answers. Your messages, photos and relevant parts of your learning profile are sent to Anthropic to produce each response. Under our agreement, Anthropic may not use this content to train its models, and it keeps it only as long as needed to provide the service and for safety and legal reasons.
- If you opt in. We may review de-identified conversations to improve Expanary's teaching. You can turn this off anytime, and it stops applying to future chats.
- AI can be wrong. Answers are generated automatically and may contain mistakes. Check important facts, and follow your school's rules on using AI for assignments.
- No face recognition. Expanary does not identify people from photos.
How we share information
We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. We share it only in these cases:
| Who | Why | What they get |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | AI model provider that writes Expanary's answers | Messages, photos, learning-profile context |
| Cloudflare | Runs the website and forwards support email | Technical and usage data, emails you send us |
| Our database and sign-in provider | Stores accounts and data, handles sign-in | Account data and content |
| Only if you choose "Continue with Google" | Your sign-in request; we receive your name, email and photo | |
| Stripe | Processes payments and, only if you choose to verify your age, runs the ID check (Stripe Identity) | Billing details and payment information. For ID checks: your ID photo and selfie, which Stripe handles; Expanary only receives your date of birth |
These providers may use your information only to provide their services to us, under contracts that require them to protect it.
We may also share information:
- With your permission, for example when you share a chat or add a parent's email.
- For legal reasons, to comply with law or a valid legal request, or to protect the safety of a person, including a child.
- If our company changes, such as a merger or sale. This policy would still apply to your information, and we would tell you first.
Children and teens
Expanary is for people 13 and older. Users under 18 need a parent or guardian's permission, and get extra protections automatically.
Under 13. Expanary is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. We ask for age when you sign up. If someone says they are under 13, we don't create the account. If we learn we have collected information from a child under 13 without verified parental consent, we will delete it promptly. Parents who think this happened can contact us at privacy@expanary.com.
Ages 13 to 17. By using Expanary, a teen confirms they have permission from a parent or guardian, who agrees to our Terms on the teen's behalf. In some countries the minimum age for using online services without parental consent is higher (up to 16 in parts of Europe); there, a parent's consent is required until that age. For teen accounts:
- "Help improve Expanary" is always off, so their chats are never used for training.
- Expanary keeps answers age-appropriate, never uses slurs or sexual content, and doesn't swear.
- If a teen says something suggesting they are in danger, Expanary encourages them to reach a trusted adult or a crisis line.
- Parental controls let a parent set homework help mode, quiet hours, and weekly progress emails.
Parents' rights. A parent or guardian can ask to see, correct, export or delete their teen's information, or close the account, by emailing privacy@expanary.com from the parent contact on file or with reasonable proof of guardianship.
Schools. If a school or district gives Expanary to students, we will sign a separate agreement with the school. Under that agreement, student data is used only to provide the Service to the school, as allowed by student-privacy laws such as FERPA, and is never used for advertising.
Your choices and rights
You can manage most of your data yourself in Settings, and you can email privacy@expanary.com for anything else. We respond within 30 days, or sooner where the law requires.
- See and export your chats, projects, schedule, library, learning profile and settings: Settings, Data controls, Export.
- Correct your account details in Settings, Account.
- Delete single chats, all chats, your library, your learning profile, or your whole account in Settings.
- Limit personalization by pausing "Learn from how I use Expanary" in Settings, Personalization.
- Opt out of emails and notifications in Settings, Notifications. Security and billing notices still apply.
California and other US states. Residents of California and other states with privacy laws have the right to know what we collect, to access, correct and delete it, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information or its use for targeted ads. We do not sell or share personal information in those ways. We won't treat you differently for using your rights. You can use an authorized agent, and we may verify your identity first.
EU, UK and similar regions. We process your information to provide the Service you asked for (contract), for safety and improvement (legitimate interests), with your consent where required (such as opting in to help improve Expanary), and to meet legal duties. You may also object to or restrict processing, ask for portability, withdraw consent, and complain to your local data protection authority.
Retention, security and contact
We keep your information while your account is open and delete it within 30 days after you delete it or close your account.
- Retention exceptions. Backups are cleared within 90 days. Payment records are kept as long as tax and accounting laws require. Information needed to resolve a dispute, stop abuse or meet a legal duty may be kept until that's done.
- Inactive accounts. If a free account is unused for 2 years, we may email you and then delete it.
- Security. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is limited to people who need it, and we work only with providers that meet strong security standards. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and keep your sign-in private.
- International transfers. We are based in the United States, and our providers may process data in other countries. Where required, we use legal safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
- Changes. If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll tell you in the app or by email before the change takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
